Obedience & Socialization Classes
We believe obedience and socialization classes are key to getting your new dog or puppy off to the right start, no matter what the age. Our classes are a bit different then others. Formal obedience work is covered but we also cover areas that will help you in so many other ways. Our goal is not to create another assembly line obedience class, but one that will teach you and your dog much more. Our classes emphasize proper leadership, as without that, your obedience work will mean little to nothing. Your success will depend on how much time you put into what you have learned.
We can assist you with preparation for obedience titling with AKC, Schutzhund, and North American Police Work Dog Association “NAPWDA”. Let us know ahead of time this is your wish and we will make sure your goal path is addressed in each class. However, after you have been through the classes you will want to consider private lessons to ready you for titling.
All classes are slated to meet once a week for an hour. However, if there is no class scheduled behind yours, and your class is full, a class might go longer then one hour. All classes are one handler and one dog.
Classes Available:
Puppy Preschool
is the foundation that will form the rest of your puppy’s life. This class gets your puppy ready for your home, family, and society. It helps both you and the pup understand each other, and starts you both on the learning process the right way.
Most dogs are given up were not socialized correctly or taught how to fit into our domestic world as puppies. The sad fact is that the average new puppy owner does not really understand their role in raising a well-mannered and well-behaved dog.
Most puppy owners assume that since their dog is taken care of physically such as food/water/house, and love, that the dog will turn out just fine.
You will learn how to influence and shape the behavior of your growing puppy, and to understand the needs of your puppy. Establishing effective communication will curb behavior problems in the future. This class is the start for owners learning to develop their puppy’s learning skills, and introduce them to proper animal and people socialization skills.
You will learn how to prevent future behavioral problems such as chewing unwanted items, play biting, barking, jumping, and more. You will learn to introduce grooming tools, and the crate. You will start teaching your puppy to follow your hand for direction, and start on the basic sit, and wait command.
Six-Week (ages 8 weeks to 16 weeks) Fee $65, minimum 6 students, maximum is 10. Meet once a week for one hour.
Items to bring:
* Puppy crate
* Flat buckle or quick release collar only
* Six-foot lead
* For treats bring fresh cooked Chicken cut into small training bits. This is a premium treat to keep their first training experience very enjoyable as well as when needed it will grab their attention fast.
* The puppy’s blanket with familiar smells on it; you will use this as a comfort zone
(follow up with puppy parties)
Basic Obedience
is essential for your puppy or adult dog to be a good citizen. Besides all the basic commands you will learn proper timing and when to treat, and being a solid and fair leader. The commands you will work on will be sit, stay, wait or stop, down, heel or walk nicely, and come.
Six-Week (ages 16 weeks and up) Fee $80, minimum 5 students, maximum is 10. Meet once a week for one hour.
Intermediate Obedience
is the refinement of the above with some added distractions with the added command of “leave it”, and work on heel if appropriate for your needs. Your classes may change locations to create different distractions for your dogs.
Six-Week (ages 16 weeks and up) Fee $100, minimum 4 students, maximum is 10. Meet once a week for one hour.
Advanced Obedience
is designed for those wishing to compete, or needing quicker responses such as with a service dog, or therapy dog. You must have completed the elements in all previous classes even if they were achieved with another trainer, otherwise this class will be too much for the dog to handle. We will assess your personal needs to enable us to help you to achieve your goals. To the extent of your needs, you will learn precision and timing of all the above commands that work in your plan. Your stays will increase in duration throughout your course, and we will work on your heel for refinement if it meets your needs. Because we customize your classes, you may work on something other then those in the class.
Six-Week (ages 6 months and up) Fee $125, minimum 4 students, maximum is 8. Meet once a week for one hour.
Manners & Social Skills
are what make our children and our dogs a joy to be around. If your dog has gotten out of control with poor manners this class is for you. We do not take aggressive dogs in this class. Your dog will learn to greet others quietly, walk on the leash nicely, take food reward easy, stand for grooming or examination, move calmly in a crowd of people, and learn the command “leave it”.
Six-Week (ages 16 weeks and up) Fee $125, minimum 4 students, maximum is 8. Meet once a week for one hour.
Social Behavior Modification classes
are designed for the dog that lunges aggressively without cause at people, and other dogs, has unstoppable and aggressive barking, acts overly aggressive in the vehicle, or other such behaviors. Don’t let the liability of having an untrained and aggressive dog put your home, and family at risk. This class requires a prior interview to insure this class can assist your dog’s issues. Your dog may be required to wear a muzzle for all or part of this class.
It is unusual for a trainer to hold a behavior class such as this, as most are private lessons. Those private lessons can run you $150 or more for every session. This is a very good way to start addressing your problem where it lies, in the public, at a reduced rate, because there will be others in your class. We use two trainers for this class when the attendance gets to four.
Six-Week (ages 16 weeks and up) Fee $300, minimum 2 students, maximum is 4 to 6, depending on the issues. Meet once a week for one to two hours.
Canine Good Citizen
This is a must class for all dogs, all breeds INCLUDING mix breeds. It not only helps you have a better mannered dog, but will also help you with liability. A dog that has been trained, and has obtained a certificate from AKC, AND maintains those qualities, is less liability. This does not mean you can stop utilizing what you have learned when your class is done, but this class gives you all the basics and tools you need to keep going. With dog bites on the rise, and with lawsuits rampant, it would be much cheaper to take this class and get started. You will learn all the elements of the test that is given by our certified evaluator, and on your last day you will take the test. If you do not pass it is recommended that you take another class. All dogs and handlers learn at different speeds. Younger dogs may take longer, but your dog must be at least six month old at time of testing. You however can take the class younger then six months old to ready your dog. During the testing time for the others, you can practice with your puppy. All puppy ages still apply as with other puppy classes. So no matter what, if you have to, or choose to take the class more then once, it is never a failure, it just makes good sense to train as much as you need to get the job done. If you pass your test on the first time, then you are well on your way to being that perfect well-mannered dog that everyone wants.
8-Week Class $90, which includes six weeks of training. On the seventh week we will hold a mock test for everyone. At the end of class we will know what areas you need to work on prior to your real test. On the last week you will be given your official AKC CGC test. All this is included in your fee.
Need a minimum of five to sign up to hold the class.
